Why I am resisting the temptation to buy a smartwatch

Is it feeding my vanity and my FOMO or is it a "smart" buy? (see what I did there? hehe)

Why I am resisting the temptation to buy a smartwatch

So, as usual I'm tempted at buying something. Which means I'll eventually do it, after I've exhausted all excuses and read all reviews, good or bad, around the item in question.

The item we're discussing today is a smart watch. Not any smart watch, but one in particular: Fossil's Gen 5. What attracts me to this particular watch are the following attributes:

  • It's pretty - It's made by a jewellery company such as Fossil and I really dig their style
  • It uses WearOS which is the Google/Android OS of smartwatches
  • I've always fantasised about getting used to wearing a watch
  • It has the usual toy-like features: phone notifications, agenda, weather, reminders, Spotify, fit apps, etc

So why not then?

Well, there are a couple of things stopping me at this moment.

First, as usual, stupid 'principles': I've always scuffed at the term 'smart' watch. Seriously, just because you add more features to a piece of technology it doesn't become 'smart'. It's a sales term, I know it. There's nothing 'smart' about a 'smartwatch' or a 'smart-tv' or a smart whatever they come up with.

In this case in particular: it's a digital watch, with sucky battery life because it has to support a multi-coloured super bright screen and it also now has to run applications, something that a regular watch usually doesn't do.

So it's more like a mini-smartphone for your wrist (there's that 'smart' term again), that also happens to look like a regular watch and... yeah it has a digital watch built into it.

And honestly, it doesn't offer any new features. If you already own a smartphone, it's redundant.

And not cheaper, by the way. A decent watch costs at least 200euros, and the one I'm looking at is around 300.

But the last thing, the very thing that is really stopping me from buying it, it's the size. I get it, you can only make things so small. But I'm not one for big chunky tech devices. And in this case it's something that I'm supposed to wear in my wrist... all...day...long. Honestly the one thing that has to be warrantied is that it will suit me physically. And this one... doesn't! It's bigger than my wrist! It's too big! Rawr!!!!!

It's so frustrating!!!! I just want to be shallow and vane!! Why did they make it so big!!!!

Anyway, now I have to do some sort of meditation to get the thought of that watch out of my mine. I will not give in!!!!

Update March 2020
I ended up buying it. I regret nothing. Update soon?
